What is family therapy?

Family relationships are unique and, as a result, require unique care. Family therapy is a great choice for any family that wants – or needs – to become stronger together. we can help you develop the ability to communicate effectively, work through conflicts, and strengthen relationships.

Families are often complex systems of relationships where parents, children, siblings, and extended family members experience a variety of symptoms.

Any individual family member can have a major impact on the entire system.

Family Therapy treats the entire system with comprehensive assessment and intervention. The entire family is understood from the perspective of each member’s goals, motivations, emotional experience, and behavioral strengths and weaknesses.

Common family therapy issues

  • Relationship difficulties in the family
  • Older adult issues in families
  • Intergenerational conflict in families
  • Parental coping and assistance.
  • Adolescent and Young Adult emotional or behavioral difficulties
  • Adjustment to becoming parents (including peri- and post-natal depression and anxiety)
  • Family stressors, grief and loss, and adjustment
  • Cross-cultural issues in families
  • Blended families

How can OVC help?

Our team can help you:

1. Improve communication with your family members, reducing conflicts and strengthening your bond.

2. Understand your family’s feelings and perspective better. This will

create a supportive environment allowing your family members to open up and convey their emotions, thoughts, and experiences related to any distress, including anxiety, tension, or resentment they might have. This sharing experience can “break down barriers” and build closeness.

3. Problem-solve and develop strategies for coping with any family crisis. This can require adjustments, changes, breaking patterns, and addressing specific issues to improve communication.

4. Reduce stress levels. Naturally, when it comes to families, emotions are high, and that causes hyper-sensitivity for everyone involved. Our therapy provides a safe space for family members to communicate their feelings and concerns calmly and with comprehensive support.

Ultimately, Family therapy is valuable to the entire family, as individual members and as a unit. Our family has a major input on our emotional state, and when we have a supportive family, we feel better, cope better, and function better.
