What is PTSD?

PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) is a disorder that sometimes develops in people who have experienced a traumatic situation sometimes many years ago. It causes an uncontrolled emotional or psychological response to different stimuli, triggering their trauma and the distress they felt when it occurred.

 

What can cause trauma?

The causes of trauma are very different, but they are all based on the emotions of fear and distress. For example, Traumatic events can include experiences such as accidents, natural disasters, violence, abuse, or other situations that threaten a person’s safety or sense of security. 


Symptoms of trauma:

  • Intrusive thoughts or memories related to the traumatic event.
  • Avoidance of situations or people that remind the person of the trauma.
  • Adverse changes in mood or thoughts, such as sadness, hopelessness, or shame.
  • Increased anxiety or hypervigilance.
  • Flashbacks or nightmares about the trauma.
  • Physical symptoms, such as headaches or gastrointestinal problems.
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions.
  • Changes in behavior, such as increased aggression or self-destructive behavior.

 It’s important to note that everyone responds to trauma differently and may experience some or all these symptoms to varying degrees.
